Fiction Film Editing Workshop
Transforming raw footage into compelling narratives through deliberate pacing, rhythm, and structure
Understanding the editorial voice
Fiction editing requires different considerations than documentary work. You work with scripted material, planned coverage, and intentional performances.
This workshop provides access to complete camera coverage from three short fiction films at different production levels. You will practice assembling scenes using classical coverage patterns, then explore creative alternatives. The program emphasizes performance selection, matching action across cuts, and maintaining spatial coherence.
Instruction covers dialogue editing, reaction shots, eyeline management, and the invisible techniques that keep viewers immersed in the story. You will learn when to break continuity rules for emotional impact and how to salvage problematic footage through creative problem-solving.
Each participant edits the same scenes, allowing direct comparison of editorial choices. Group critique sessions reveal how different approaches affect viewer perception, pacing, and emotional response. The final assessment requires cutting a complete narrative short from dailies, demonstrating command of both technical execution and storytelling craft.
